Charlie Hooks

Charlie Hooks

Instrument(s): Clarinet, saxophones, flute

A native Texan who came north to the U of Michigan, got stuck up here with all these yankees and seems to have become one. Lived in River Forest, a Chicago suburb where his band played world’s longest running brunch–22 years, 4 months, and 2 days.

A former college professor of English and American Literature, he began playing clarinet in 1938. He played his way through college and grad school, then ran away from academe during the insane 70s to play with Pee Wee Hunt’s band, with the Celebration Road Show, with Beebe’s Chicago Jazz, and formed his own band, “Chazzjazz.” in the 80s.
